DIVINING EMILY

In 1996, I discovered the name

of my great-grandmother, Emily Blackwell, and began research into her life, slowly gathering information when time allowed, which I assembled into an illustrated memoir, my first book,

Divining Emily, Part One,

the first of two parts...or will there be three?

In pursuit of Emily, I have traveled to British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, Washington, DC and twice to Cuba with permission from the US Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control.

ROCKLYN RECEIPTS

I have been compiling a list of names taken from a handwritten household receipts book created by family members and friends of Rocklyn, the house my great, great, great-grandfather, Edward Barron Chandler, had built in Dorchester, New Brunswick in 1831. It seems his wife Phoebe, his youngest son Joshua, and Joshua’s wife Minnie were the major contributors, but there were quite a few others who left their names with their receipts. Rocklyn Receipts reproduces and expands upon this handwritten document containing about a hundred recipes dated from 1865. It is not an easy task and, oh my, the handwriting is fierce! The available history I have scraped together of Rocklyn and Dorchester is based primarily on the accomplishments of men in politics, big business, i.e.: Edward Barron Chandler, Weldon, Chapman, Botsford, Palmer, etc. Politics and big business are not what I want for this book; it is more so a story about their families, friends, and neighbors, and what they ate at Rocklyn in Dorchester.
